What is a clementine?

The smallest and sweetest variety of tangerine is sweet and tangy, contains no seeds and is recognisable by its loose, baggy bright orange skin.

Tangerine segments can be eaten on their own or dipped in melted chocolate. The zest can be candied or used to flavour recipes.

Availability

In season from November until February.

Choose the best

The outside appearance of the skin is no indication of quality. Feel for fruits that are heavy for their size as they will contain more juice.

Prepare it

The vitamin content is best retained by peeling or zesting clementines just prior to eating them.

Store it

Keep in the fridge for up to a week.

Alternatives

Try mandarin, orange or satsuma.
