VonShef mini fridge in a nutshell

Pros: very roomy and stays free from fingerprints
Cons: very slight noise

Star rating: 4.5/5

Available from VonShef (£112.99)

The attractive, smooth black statin finish on this mini, cube-shaped fridge is one of its big selling points. We especially liked that even after robust testing, it showed barely any fingerprints. Any marks only took a quick wipe with a damp cloth to remove. The door handle is recessed, further adding to the clean, neat looks of the fridge.

These good looks contradict the budget price, coming in at just under £90. Even at this low cost, surprisingly, it was also one of the largest volumes (47 litres) of the mini fridges we tested of a similar style and price point, making it even more of a bargain.

The adjustable thermostat is easy to read and adjust with 10 setting points. Our thermometer reading remained steady over a week and everything stored well on a mid-range setting. Even after seven days, all the produce was still going strong.

The fridge is a manual defrost, a process made easier with the handy drip tray included. The tray is strong enough to also double up as a clever storage box for canned drinks or bottles – when laid in the box, they are prevented from rolling around the fridge.

Unfortunately, there is only one wire shelf in the main compartment. While this is not adjustable, it can be removed to create more space. In the door, there's a movable wire rail to accommodate large drinks bottles and milk cartons. The 5-litre icebox stores ice well, but as with all mini fridges, it is not recommended to freeze or store perishable frozen foods.

We did notice a slight humming noise with this fridge which came on regularly even in a cold room. If the refrigerator is to be in a bedroom, this could become annoying. We tested the noise by raising the internal temperature ever so slightly, and the humming stopped. Thus, this is a feature worth playing around with to keep the noise to a minimum.

Coming in at under 50cm high, this fridge will slide comfortably under a desk, or equally sit well and look good on a worktop. The Von Shef is a high-performing fridge at a great price.
