At only £70, this cheap-and-cheerful microwave is a great basic buy. Although it only offers microwave (rather than combination) cooking, it’s simple and straightforward, and does the job well enough.

A stand-out in terms of looks, the copper effect and curved edges are stylish, and there’s also the option of buying a matching kettle and toaster, which is a bonus in the utilitarian world of microwaves.

A handle makes it easy to open and close, and a two-year guarantee means it should last. It's also very compact, making it ideal for smaller kitchens.

Offering a generous 800W and five power settings, eight auto-cooking programmes are available to reheat pizza, cook meat, and produce fluffy jacket potatoes.

In testing, jacket spuds needed a couple more minutes to be totally cooked through, while chicken was slow to defrost and a little dry when cooked – but only small adjustments to the pre-set timings are needed to fix these issues.

Functions include a 30-second express button for heating liquids, defrost and autocook, all of which are instinctive to use and easy to grasp. It also offers a child lock, digital timer and delay start. A great basic buy, perfect for starter homes, students and smaller kitchens.
