Our first impressions of the KitchenAid cordless hand mixer 5KHMB732

KitchenAid rarely disappoints when it comes to stylish design, and this hand mixer is no exception. It has a simple, cylindrical shape and is available in red, matte black, cream or charcoal grey. It’s supplied with twin beaters, but no dough hooks. We're also disappointed to see two big chunks of polystyrene in the box, making the packaging difficult to recycle.

As part of KitchenAid’s cordless collection, this is a rechargeable mixer. As you’re not tethered to a cable, it's a good choice if your kitchen doesn't have many plug sockets. A full charge will take 2 hrs, so you’ll have to remember to charge it after each use to ensure it’s ready to go when you next need it. There’s also a handy light on the handle that changes colour to indicate how much battery is left.

How is the KitchenAid cordless hand mixer 5KHMB732 to use?

There’s usually a spare socket or two in most people’s kitchens, so cord-free kitchen appliances aren’t usually necessary. But, we like the freedom of a cordless mixer more than expected. The ability to mix wherever you like, regardless of the power situation, is actually quite handy.

This mixer feels lightweight in use and the handle is more comfortable than it looks. However, there are thin grooves on the handle as well as other parts of the mixer that can catch grime and grease after just a few uses, and they’re tricky to get clean. After whisking egg whites, cream and buttercream, the battery still has plenty of charge left. But, should you run out of power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you enough power to whip up a cake batter. Overall, this mixer doesn’t struggle on test – it whips cream, egg whites and buttercream with ease and is pleasantly quiet during mixing.

Our verdict

This is a pricey hand mixer, but for the convenience of cordless mixing coupled with KitchenAid’s signature style and great performance, it might just be worth the investment for some.
